Cellular Intervention for Advanced Age Management

Telomeres Harding Medical Institute

The new frontier in anti-aging medicine is the science of telomeres and telomerase activation. The physicians at the Harding Medical Institute are actively involved in pursuing this remarkable research and as a result were the first to bring TA-65 to Orlando. Dr. Deborah Harding has been featured on a number of news shows discussing the science of Telomere health and supplements such as TA-65® that can make a difference in your health and how you age.

There are trillions of cells in our body and at any given time a great number are dividing to keep us alive and replace damaged or dead cells. The process is directed by genes found within the DNA of each cell.

Telomeres Are The Caps Protecting DNA

Telomeres are the end of each chromosome and provide a cap to protect the DNA from degradation.  Telomeres have no genetic function; they are simply stretches of DNA (repeats of base pairs) that protect the rest of the chromosome. These little ends have been likened to the plastic tips on shoelaces because they prevent the chromosome from “fraying.”

However, each time a cell divides a portion of the telomere is removed and causes the telomeres to become progressively shorter.  When the telomere cap get too short then the cell can no longer divide and dies.  For some people who have short telomeres due to genetics or from a lifestyle that causes excessive cellular death, such as smoking, then the signs of aging can appear earlier in age.  For other people. who have longer telomere lengths. their cells are able to continually replenish the damaged cells and regrow causing them to not experience the signs of aging.  An example of such signs of aging are in the sagging of skin which has not been able to replenish collagen to keep skin firm.

Scientists have only recently begun to understand the critical importance of shortened telomeres. Research has shown that people over 60 who have long telomeres experience greater heart and immune system health than their age-matched counterparts with shorter telomeres. Thus, it is becoming well-understood that maintaining telomere length is important in preventing age-related decline.

Telomere Length Testing

Telomere length testing can measure exactly how long your average telomere length is compared to other age related standards. This can provide a glimpse into both your genetics and signs of daily physical stress.  Poor diet and inflammation also lead to oxidative DNA damage and can accelerate telomere shortening.   At the Harding Medical Institute’s Anti-Aging Program we work with our patients to identify telomere length and methods for maintaining telomeres.  …Read More

Influence of Telomeres on Cardiovascular Health

  • Reduced telomere lengths are found in patients with cardiovascular risk factors such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, smoking, physical inactivity, stress, and chronic infections.
  • Shorter telomeres have been associated with increased incidence of heart diseases and poor survival.

Short Telomeres are Present in Almost All Preneoplastic Lesions

Evidence for Telomere Shortening in Human Genetic and Chronic Diseases

  • Chronic wounds (pressure ulcers, diabetic ulcers)
  • Myeloproliferative disorders – decreased general immunity
  • Macular degeneration (retinal epithelium, endothelium)
  • Arteriosclerosis (vascular endothelium; angiogenesis responses)
  • Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis –
  • Muscular dystrophy – dystrophin mutation
  • Liver cirrhosis (hepatocellular carcinoma)
  • Barrett’s esophagus – esophageal cancer
  • Ulcerative colitis – colorectal cancer
